Dabur joins hands with Chhattisgarh Govt to Promote Biodiversity

Raipur, May 21, 2018: Moving forward on its mission to ensure Environmental Sustainability, Dabur India Ltd today joined hands with the Chhattisgarh State Medicinal Plant Board (CGSMPB) to roll out a mega biodiversity promotion and development initiative aimed preserving rare medicinal plants in the region through Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR). This joint initiative, which will involve training the rural populace on sustainable herb cultivation, will create job opportunities for local communities and positively impact more than 4,000 households in Chhattisgarh in the first phase.
 
Dabur and CGSMPB signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Raipur today to mark the launch of this joint initiative. The MoU was signed by Dr J L N Sastry, Ayurveda Research Head, Dabur India Ltd and Mr. A.K. Dwivedi, CEO, Chhattisgarh State Medicinal Plant Board.

Our Environment Sustainability strategy is aimed at preserving ecosystems, halting the accelerated loss of biodiversity through programmes aimed at protecting rare medicinal herbs from extinction, promoting sustainable cultivation of rare herbs, and involving the community in the process. This programme is another step forward in this direction and offers support to communities to enable them to build more self-reliance and capability to make the changes they want to see in their area,” Dr. J L N Sastry said.
 
This MoU covers more than 800 Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMC), which will together will work with Dabur to identify specific sites for plantation of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) besides analyzing community livelihood needs. After the initial ground work, Dabur will depute its scientists to impart appropriate training to the beneficiary communities and JFMC members on sustainable harvesting and cultivation practices, post-harvesting treatments, packaging and other related processes concerning collection of medicinal plants. Dabur has also signed an agreement to procure sustainably these medicinal plants, like Arjun Bael, Kutaj Gambhar, Vidarikand Giloy, etc. from the community.
 
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. A.K. Dwivedi, CEO, CGSMPB, said: “This agreement is a win-win for all as it covers providing sustainable raw material, livelihood generation for forest dependent communities, and natural regeneration of forest species. It will go a long way in conserving the natural resources in our wide-ranging ecosystem, thereby increasing the green cover.”
 
This collaboration will encompass all the Van Suraksha Samities (VSS), JFMCs of forest Divisions. In addition to training the rural populace, Dabur will also extend support by way of providing sorting tables and other tools in selected collection points.
