Dabur Partners with HP Govt to Promote Biodiversity, Sustainable Cultivation of Himalayan Medicinal Plants

Press release

Shimla, 24th February, 2026: Moving forward on its mission to ensure Environmental Sustainability, Dabur India Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Himachal Pradesh to upscale the sustainable cultivation of elite Himalayan medicinal plants. This strategic partnership involves the State Biodiversity Board (HP SBB), the Forest Department, and the Department of AYUSH. The MoU was signed by Dr. Pankaj Prasad Raturi, Head – Bioresource, Dabur Research & Development Centre and MR. D.C. Rana, IAS, Member Secretary, Himachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board in Presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister Himachal Pradesh, Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

The collaboration aims to upscale the cultivation of elite Himalayan medicinal plants, particularly those listed under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) that have faced a steady decline in the wild. By promoting structured cultivation, the initiative will mitigate future Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) liabilities while securing a transparent supply chain for critical raw materials.

As the country's leading Science-based Ayurveda company, Dabur has put in place several initiatives to responsibly take care of the Planet, preserve its beauty and resources for future generations. We have a proud tradition of innovation, not just in product development but also in Environmental Sustainability. Our Environment Sustainability strategy is aimed at preserving ecosystems, halting the accelerated loss of biodiversity through programmes aimed at protecting rare medicinal herbs from extinction, promoting sustainable cultivation of rare herbs, and involving the community in the process. This programme is another step forward in this direction and offers support to communities to enable them to build more self-reliance and capability to make the changes they want to see in their area,” Dabur India Limited Global Operations Head Mr. Saurabh Lal said.

This collaboration is strategically designed to transform the local agricultural landscape by shifting focus toward high-value, low-volume medicinal crops that thrive in the specific agro-climatic zones of Himachal Pradesh. By establishing a cluster-based cultivation model, the program provides rural growers with a climate-resilient income stream that is less vulnerable to the volatile weather patterns affecting traditional agriculture. This organized cultivation secures a consistent, high-quality supply of “at-risk” herbs for the Ayurvedic industry, effectively reducing the pressure on wild forest habitats and ensuring that the heritage of Indian traditional medicine remains sustainable for generations to come.

Through this landmark agreement, we are committing to an annual distribution of more than 1.2 million seedlings, promoting over twelve critical Himalayan species in close collaboration with the Forest Department, the Department of AYUSH, and the State Biodiversity Board. Our role at Dabur extends far beyond mere distribution. We are providing a comprehensive support ecosystem that includes technical training, capacity building, and advanced post-harvest technologies, backed by guaranteed buy-back arrangements to ensure long-term sustainability for our farming partners. These activities are designed to create robust livelihood opportunities for rural communities especially among woman farmers, while playing a pivotal role in conserving these prestigious species, effectively restoring biodiversity within their natural habitats through sustainable cultivation. Dabur India Limited Head-Bioresources Development Dr. Pankaj Prasad Raturi said.
