Kadam, kadam ghataaye jaa! Millions of women in rural India take an assault on their dignity every single day...too much of a price to pay for something as simple as attending nature’s call?

Rano is a 13 year old girl who lives in a small village called Boha in the Thar desert. She has to wake up at 4 A.M. and walk half a kilometre to the nearest shrubs and bushes so that she can hide amidst the wilderness and relieve herself freely. One morning, on her long walk towards the bushes, she stumbled upon a rock and cut her arm with a sharp thorn. What made it worse was that she was almost bit by a desert snake and had to run for her life in the other direction out of pure fright. She waited for a while and then went behind a rock to relieve herself. The event shook her up and she went home crying to her mother to ask their father to build a toilet. Lata, is a 15 year old girl from Kavalur village of Tamil Nadu, lives a challenging life. She wakes up at the crack of dawn to take a petrifying journey of a couple of kilometres, just to relieve herself. The trail that she follows is not only risky but challenging too. Accidents are not uncommon and often unfortunate. Lata has recently witness a near-to-death experience. One fateful day, when the tide was high and the winds were strong, she had an accident on the rickety bridge she is to cross daily. The creaky old bridge gave way under her, as the withered ropes succumbed to the harsh weather conditions. Lata had a dangerous fall into the stream and was barely saved by a group of fishermen. She lay lifeless and numb for hours after that and when she woke up, she swore to never go out of her house alone. That day she begged her father to build her a toilet. In Jhumpa's village - Rajadanga, West Bengal, they follow a strange rule. No unmarried girl is allowed to walk deep into the forest to relieve herself, unless accompanied by an elderly female guardian. No, it's not a custom. Nor is it the fear of wild animals. This is a desperate measure to safeguard the dignity of young girls like Jhumpa, from lewd men will ill-intentions. Many of Jhumpa's friends have encountered harassment. Some have even lost their lives, after the loss of their dignity. All of this just because they needed to relieve themselves. The mere thought of stepping out alone, in the eerie darkness of the deep forests, freaks Jhumpa out. She wants her family to construct a toilet at home. Don't you think girls like her deserve their right to dignity and a fear-free life? The Initiative A large percentage of women in our country do not have access to toilets. They have to walk long distances in search of spots (outside the village or slums), where they can relieve themselves. This often subjects them to unwanted attention. In his Independence Day speech this year, Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi outlined the need of toilets for women, as a key for India's development. Take a step towards helping our less fortunate sisters and daughters, by enabling us in constructing toilets for them. This will not only reduce the risk to their safety but safeguard their dignity as well. Help us help them, by reducing the distance they walk for relieving themselves from 700steps to a mere 7.
