Ayurvedic treatment for Schizophrenia

Management of Schizophrenia is based on the chikitsa sutra of ‘sannipataja unmada’. It consists of:

  • Internal purification using medicated oil (Snehapana),
  • Therapeutic purgation (Virechana),
  • Insufflation of medicine through nasal passage (Nasya), and
  • detoxification/ cleansing enemas ( Vastikarma)
  • Medicated smoking/ fumigation (Dhumprapana) and Anjana (Medicinal application in the eye)

Medhya drugs such as Mandukaparni (Centella asiatica Linn.), Yastimadhu (Glycirrhiza glabra Linn.), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia (Wild) Miers) and Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pleuricaulis Chois) are beneficial in these conditions.

Ayurveda describes Satvajya (Psychiatric councelling), Daiva Vyapashraya Chikitsa (Worship Enchanting etc) and hetuviparitarthakari and paraspar pratidvand chikitsa or the therapies that involves antagonistic treatments with favourable patient outcomes.

Repeated Shodhanas (expelling treatments) may be needed.4Nasyakarma and Yoga basti are recommended. Yoga basti with Kalyanak ghrita along with pre and post rituals for panchkarma are to be followed.

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • Use of milk, ghee, sweet dish etc influences the Pravar Satva (Higher mental equilibrium).
  • Madhur rasa and amla rasa strength the indriya & positively influences the satva (positive state of mind).
  • Medhya rasanayana is recommended

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

  • Achar rasayan (Good behavior and lifestyle) too influences the Pravar Satva (Higher mental equilibrium).
  • Meditation and pranayama may be beneficial inschizophrenia.
