What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a blackish-brown semisolid mass, mainly consisting of a mixture of low molecular weight organic compounds and paleohumus, naturally exuding from steep rocks in many mountain ranges especially in Himalayan and Hindukush ranges of Indian Subcontinent. Today, Shilajit is understood to be a reminiscent of vegetation fossils that has undergone a high amount of metamorphosis due to temperature, moisture and the pressure of the earth.

The Himalayan Mountains are understood to have been formed from the collision of the sub Asian and Indian continents about 50 million years ago. During the collision-dense vegetation comprising of entire rain forests are understood to have been trapped under millions of tones of pressure, which slowly changed this vegetation into a rich bioactive material, called Shilajit. Thus Shilajit represents originality of ancient vegetation and purity of non-exposure to any harmful fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide and other pollutants.

How it was discovered?

The discovery of Shilajit is said to be made by some Himalayan tribal villagers, who have been observing white monkeys (a species of monkey found in Himalayas) migrate to higher mountains in summer months. The monkeys were observed to lick the semi solid substance exuding out the rock crevices. Since observing the animal behaviors were an important part of healthcare research in ancient times, those villagers attributed the great strength, longevity and wisdom of those monkeys to this substance. Curious by the thought, they themselves started taking the substance and reported a broad spectrum of improvement in their health and stamina. It gave them more energy, relieve digestive problems, increase sex drive, improve to memory etc, with the passage of the time traditional health practitioners established the methods to purify the substance. Still today one can see in towns throughout Himalaya, tribal people selling raw Shilajit stones to any one interested.

The benefits of the Shilajit for body are as follows.

As an Anti-oxidant.

Free radicals are generated by the normal metabolism of oxygen, alcohol consumption, trauma, environmental pollutants, smoking, pesticides (on fruits, vegetables) and even exercise. One can not avoid generation of free radicals, which try to balance by stealing an electron from another atom or molecule, damaging that atom and creating another free radical, resulting into a chain reaction. Free radicals are associated with almost all the disease processes, besides damaging the body and rendering the cells old.

By virtue of its potent free radical scavenging (antioxidant) activity, Shilajit helps offers a defense mechanism for the ageing of the cells and helps them remain juvenile. A younger body would obviously perform better than an old one. Besides it would help combat the degenerative diseases, which occur due to free radicals in the body.

Defense against Allergy symptoms.

Shilajit helps to stabilize mast cells and prevent histamine from being released into the blood. Thus it prevents affections caused by the histamine, namely sneezing, runny nose, itchy and tearing eyes, skin rash etc. An individual suffering from any of these allergy symptoms may not be able perform better and even loose interest in sex slowly. Shilajit, by ascertaining its mast cell protection effect helps the body be in its optimum performing state.

As a nutritive agent.

Shilajit is good source of some useful trace elements and minerals, which are vital for body. It provides iron to the body, which is vital for making red blood cells (RBCs). Besides its ability to enhance the absorption of other nutrients taken by the individual helps body get maximum benefits of the nutrients. By virtue of this activity, Shilajit helps rejuvenate the body.

As an asthmatic agent.

It is a known fact that for a person suffering from Asthma it becomes difficult to perform high aerobic activities like sexual intercourse. Shilajit helps in asthmatic conditions by virtue of its bronchodialatory effects. Besides, its potent anti-histamine activity helps combat asthmatic conditions. Regular usage of Shilajit helps in improving quality of life in asthmatic patients and thus helps them perform better in all physical fronts including sex.

By improving liver functions.

Shilajit is scientifically proven to have liver protecting effects. It has been proved to lower liver cholesterol, serum tryglycerides and serum phospholipids. By maintaining the liver functions, Shilajit helps body perform various functions attributed to liver like digestion metabolism etc, and helps body remain juvenile. It also helps combat toxic elements from the liver and helps rejuvenate the body.

Further role of Shilajit in balancing cholesterol and sugar level also help in maintaining proper body functions.

By improving cardiac functions.

Shilajit helps reduce the accumulation of fatty substances, cholesterol, and other cellular wastes in the inner lining of the arteries. It also prevents LDL cholesterol from being damaged by the free radicals and thus prevents generation of "foam cells" which also accumulates inside the arteries leading to even atheroscierosis and cardiac failure. Thus by marinating healthy arteries and blanching the cholesterol levels, Shilajit helps in the proper blood circulation which is important to maintain the body and mind in its optimum working condition.

By improving the CNS functions.

Shilajit has the ability to cross the blood barrier (BBB) and increases the boby's own powerful anti-oxidant enzymes, Super oxide dismutase and Glutathione peroxidase. This helps to protect your brain from age related damage caused by long-term free radicals. It also increases levels of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine by inhibiting the enzyme, acetyl cholinesterase. This improves ones ability to link clearly and improve memory. An optimum nervous system would definitely help in coordination between various function of body and mind including improved libido.

As an Antistress agent.

One losses interest in sex if you are overstressed. For better performance, it is imperative that one should free from physical as well as mental fatigue or stress. Shilajit by improving the stress tolerance helps this and hence indirectly improves your libido and performance.

As an Adaptogenic agent.

Regular usage of Shilajit helps body and mind to acclimatize to the new and varied environmental, climatic and social conditions without much stress. This helps in marinating the body and mind in their optimum state.

All these above health benefits of Shilajit facilitate rejuvenation of body and mind. A rejuvenated mind and body would obviously perform better than diseased and stressed ones. Thus, shilajit helps in maintaining ones libido by helping the body remain young and juvenile.

Besides there are a few research finding where shilajit has been objectively proved to have aphrodisiac effect. In one such work scientists in Bulgaria, who are interested in non-hormonal treatment for sexual deficiencies and anomalies studied Shilajit and found that 750 mg shilajit taken daily increased testosterone levelly by over 30%. It also improved the speed, motility and the number old sperms in men.

In yet another study published in Indian Journal of Medical Research, prolonged administration of shilajit was found to cause increase of testes and seminal vesicle in male rats. The study concludes that these effects as well as the administration of shilajit in spermatorrhoea seem to indicate some endocrine stimulating action similar to those produced by tropic hormones of the anterior pituitary.

Role of Shilajit as an Aphrodisiac

Ayurveda recognizes health as an unification of our body, mind soul and sense organs. It postulates all the four factors should be in optimum condition to obtain a better health. These four elements can be analogous to four wheels of a car - any one getting deflated may lead the car turn turtle. Similarly, if any of these elements are not in its optimum condition, it will affect the performance of the individual in all fronts. If we have a look on definition of health- unification of physical, mental, environmental, social and spiritual well being"- one sees that almost the same concept of Ayurveda has been postulated by WHO today.

Thus it is imperative for an individual to maintain his body, mind, soul and senses in order to be in a better performing state.

Similarly, Ayurveda looks at lack of libido, through the problems associated with mind and body. These include- Anxiety neurosis, depression, mental and physical stress, mental and physical fatigue, lack of proper digestion, lack of smooth functioning of heart (blood circulation) and liver etc. As a matter of fact, Ayurveda addresses all these root causes to correct the lack of libido. Hence it recommends "Rasayana" which do function on all these systems and correct the imbalance thus giving an overall well-being. It postulates that once you are healthy at physical body as well as your mind. Your libido is bound to be normal.

Shilajit is perhaps the best Rasayana, Ayurveda has prescribed. The underlying power of Shilajit comes from its potency of reducing the stress of internal organs, effecting balanced energy metabolism and anti- ageing. It rejuvenates and heals every body cell and helps the cell grow at any age. Obviously a younger body can withstand all types of ailments and can better perform.
